Create Reusable Skills for Your Business AI Agents

Turn a working business method into a Workspace Skill. Define inputs, steps, outputs, and exceptions, then select it for an Agent and test the result.

When a method works, you should not have to retype it for every task. A Skill gives an Agent a reusable procedure: how to compare sources, prepare a report, classify feedback, or review a work queue.

In Clanker Workspace, a Skill is distinct from reference knowledge and a Tool. Knowledge supplies facts or policies. A Skill supplies the method. A Tool performs an operation. The configuration guide explains how these pieces fit together.

Capture a method you already use

Take a fictional content queue review. The coordinator needs to know which items are ready, which are blocked, and what evidence supports the status. An item labeled Approved without a reviewer or approval date should be questioned before publication.

Run one review in a Session using sample records. Refine the output until it matches the coordinator's checklist. Then describe the method as a Skill rather than preserving every detail of that one example.

Open Skills, create a Skill with a clear name and description, and add its procedure using the available editor fields. Give it a name such as Content Queue Review. Choose its Project context deliberately and save it in an enabled state before selecting it for the intended Agent.

Write steps with visible results

A starting procedure might read:

Purpose: review a supplied content queue for internal planning.

Inputs: records with item ID, status, owner, reviewer, and approval date.

Method:
1. Preserve each item ID and original status.
2. Check Approved items for a reviewer and approval date.
3. Mark missing evidence as a proposed blocker, with the reason.
4. Keep unknown owners and dates visible.
5. Return a review table and questions for the coordinator.

Output: a saved review file; source records remain unchanged.
Stop and ask when required fields or the status definitions are missing.
Do not publish content or change the external queue.

The procedure defines a review, not a connection to a publishing system. Selecting this Skill does not provide credentials, grant a new Tool, or turn the method into unattended work.

Keep company policy in reviewed knowledge and current queue records in the Project. If the policy changes, identify which copy the Agent should use and test the affected rule again.

Attach the Skill and test its behavior

Choose the Skill for the custom Agent intended to do the review. Confirm the Agent has the operations needed to read the supplied records and save the output.

Use a deliberately small test:

Record Expected result
Q-17: Approved, reviewer missing, approval date missing Proposed blocker identifying both missing fields.
Q-18: Approved, reviewer and date present Records the available approval evidence.
Q-19: Draft, owner unknown Preserves Draft and flags the missing owner.

Inspect the saved file. The Skill is useful when its method is followed and the output exposes the problem you expected. A saved Skill appearing in the library is only a configuration check.

The SOP starter provides a fuller fictional procedure and exception test. Use it to make the review understandable to a colleague who did not write it.

Reuse the method with new inputs

Use the same Skill on another queue while replacing the Project-specific records. Record material changes to the procedure and repeat the exception test when instructions, knowledge, or Tools change.

You can share reviewed Skills through the supported sharing controls, but review what is included before exposing client-specific material. The team sharing article covers reuse with colleagues.

Once the complete Agent works, choose a business automation trigger for it. Creating the Skill itself does not schedule a run or connect an email address.
